Tenuta Le Piane is perfectly placed to make the most of the most dramatic stretch of the Apennines. Just within the boundary of the Sibillini National Park, the Tenuta could be the base for some unforgettable walks or for days spent pottering around the medieval villages of Amàndola and Sarnano. Those who prefer something even less
demanding can always just admire the landscape from the poolside or from the shade of a
pergola. The estate is made up of a seventeenth
century villa where the friendly, English-speaking owners still live, and four converted
houses from the original sixteenth century hamlet, all bordered by 400 acres of ancient
woodland. The houses have been converted with
great respect for local styles with thick wooden crossbeams and exposed stone walls, old
fireplaces and terracotta floors, while some unusual features such as cattle feeding
troughs have been cleverly retained. Living
rooms have pretty soft furnishings and the bedrooms maintain the authentic country feel
with traditional bedframes and textiles. Each
apartment has been designed to give guests a private sitting area and pergola
outside. The Fattoria is the most recent conversion, completed in 1998, and is made up of two large apartments and two studios which can be combined. The house has its own swimming pool (10.5m x 5.5m) with changing rooms and shower, a communal play area and laundry room. A short walk through the trees brings you
to the other houses, which also have their own swimming pool and changing facilities. Casale Il Castagno and Casale La Quercia
are part of the same farmhouse which sits on the brow of a grassy bank. La Quercia has wonderful views of the mountains. Casale Il Ginepro is an independent house
of brick and rough stone just the other side of a small, fragrant herb garden which guests
are welcome to plunder for their evening meals. The
three apartments share a laundry room. Tucked away on the other side of the hamlet is a charming independent villa, Casale Il Cerro. An old, stone-built house now restored and boasting many modern conveniences, Il Cerro occupies a quiet, private position with a secluded garden and magnificent views of the Sibillini mountains and surrounding valleys. Guests staying here now have the use of a private swimming pool and the house is quite separate from the other properties at Tenuta le Piane just under a kilometre away. Mountain bikes, ideal for exploring a woodland rich in wildlife, are available for hire and Alpine Guides can be organised for walking tours of the Sibillini mountains. Distances:
