This cosy house is perched on the edge of Rocca D’Orcia, one of the most photogenic medieval villages in southern Tuscany. The approach to the village from the Rome-Siena road is delightful: a cluster of tiny houses cling to the hillside below the fortress from which both village and apartment take their name. The views across the countryside from one of the apartment’s flower-filled terraces are equally special. The village itself doesn’t disappoint. Given its hilltop location, modern development has been impossible so the pocket-sized piazza, with its large well, bar and trattoria, seems like the set of a nostalgic Italian film. Even in high season it is very quiet. The apartment is on two levels. Downstairs there is a kitchen/dining room with a low, beamed ceiling and a small library, while upstairs there is a simple double bedroom which has its own balcony. Distances:
