The Floriani family of Macerata built their charming villa as a hunting lodge in the 1500s, on a neighbouring ridge overlooking the city. Today the 25-acre estate is spread with olive groves and an organic smallholding supplying produce for the family-owned osteria (restaurant) in the estates grounds. The villa itself and its two guest bedrooms stand in a shady grove. Its homely interior, with frescoed ceilings and walls of family portraits, must have changed little over the past few centuries. The family still live in one wing of the villa, which also houses one of the oldest family archives in Italy it documents the family history back to 1055. A hundred metres below the villa is an estate house containing three apartments, recently restored. Here the south-facing apartments, furnished with antiques, enjoy spectacular views across the valley to Macerata, which is just two kilometres away by road. Distances:
